Teachers are called ‘nation builders’. If that is true, what sort of nation/world have we built over the years? The most impressionable part of a person’s life is spent in school. This is the time one’s attitudes and values are shaped. That means, as teachers we have a great role in shaping a child’s personality. As teachers, are we doing justice to our roles as ‘nation builders’ and ‘torch bearers of civilization’? This question is a major concern to educators.
Context: A school is supposed to be one of the fundamental socializing agencies that instills value education in its students leading them to become citizens who contribute to the world we live in. However, the reality is quite different; we see educated men and women who are selfish, greedy, violent and divisive. This clearly shows that schools have failed to improve the moral fabric of our nations. A group of HRD professionals in Pune led by Kiran Gandhi, felt a need to address this issue, leading to the birth of ‘Education Today Society Tomorrow’ [ETST] workshops.
Aims and Objectives: Reinventing schools, Rebuilding the world.
ETST workshops work towards bringing the passion back into the teaching profession by initiating positive changes in the way an individual thinks, learns and interacts, leading to holistic improvement in the educational scenario in India and the world. The workshop addresses all the relevant domains of a teacher’s being:
- Teacher as a person – ability to manage oneself. Our programme emphasizes the need for an individual to examine oneself critically with regard to one’s thoughts, beliefs and actions and to make improvements in one’s character so that one may lead one’s life more effectively
- Teacher as a facilitator – ability to innovate and upgrade one’s attitude, knowledge and skills to improve classroom interactions
- Teacher as an administrator –ability to lead and manage students / an organization
- Teacher as a change maker – ability to be a catalyst for change in one’s school, community, country and the world
ETST engages all the stakeholders of the educational sphere, viz. the parents, students, managements as well as government authorities.
Isn't there an urgent need to re look at our role as teachers and schools in creating a sustainable, respectful and peaceful society? Come and join us in our quest to reinvent schools and rebuild the world.
